When I learned that I had been paired with Me Sophie Lamonde, the Managing Partner at Stikeman Elliott, as part of McGill’s Day in the Life initiative, I was thrilled. With the Course aux Stages blackout period just days away, I was unsure if I would have the opportunity to arrange anything beforehand. Yet, Stikeman Elliott went out of their way to make something work. I was invited to their Montréal office to meet lawyers from different practice groups and to get a better sense of the firm’s culture.

That morning, I stepped onto the 41st floor of the Stikeman Elliott building. I was greeted by Me Nathalie Nouvet (BCL/LLB ’10), a partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group, whose practice centers on restructuring, insolvency, and commercial litigation. We began the day with an insightful conversation about her journey from law school to partnership, the practice of litigation, and how Stikeman Elliott supports women in the profession. Her openness and enthusiasm immediately put me at ease and set the tone for the day.

I then headed to lunch at Ryu with two young associates, Me Juliette Regoli (BCL/JD ’23) and Me Darien Bahry (BCL/JD ’22). Over sushi, the conversation shifted toward life as a junior lawyer at Stikeman Elliott. They emphasized the firm’s collaborative spirit and close team dynamics to create a motivating and enjoyable workplace. Both also spoke about the value of getting involved in the firm’s sports teams, whether soccer, volleyball, or others, which is one of the many ways Stikeman fosters a strong sense of community.

Later in the afternoon, I had the chance to meet Me Lamonde in her office. She was candid about the realities of her role as Managing Partner, where much of her work involves confidential matters and client meetings. Originally drawn to theatre, she eventually discovered that corporate law was where she thrived. We also discussed the firm’s diverse client base, which spans national and international clients, and how her work often requires her to travel, including to Europe. Our conversation showed me the complex and evolving responsibilities that come with being a Managing Partner at a leading law firm.

The day concluded with a meeting with Me Rubis Chaput, Director of Student Programs at the firm. She offered valuable advice on how to prepare for the Course aux Stages, including practical tips for navigating the process and making the most of the opportunity.

Reflecting on the experience, what stood out to me the most was not only the caliber of legal minds but also the genuine openness and approachability of everyone I encountered at the firm. My day at Stikeman Elliott reflected the kind of firm that values its people, fosters both professional and personal growth, and consistently strives for excellence in its work. For a student preparing for the Course aux Stages, it was a reassuring and inspiring experience that gave me a clearer perspective on the journey ahead in corporate law, beyond recruitment.
